Both Eastern and Western medical traditions agree on one vital aspect of health: the importance of moderation in our diets. Understanding how much to eat and drink is fundamental to maintaining good health and achieving a happy life.

The Wisdom of Eating Less: Not Eating Like a Cow

It might sound humorous, but there's wisdom in not eating like a cow. Cows eat up to 60-70% of their stomach capacity, but humans tend to eat between 80-90%. This difference is significant. Overeating is common in our culture where food is abundant and portions are large. However, both traditional and modern healthcare systems advocate for eating only until we are about 70-80% full. This practice, often emphasized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is not just about weight management but about preserving stomach function and energy.

The Art of Restraint in Eating:

Moderation in eating helps maintain our digestive system’s health, ensuring that it isn’t overwhelmed. This restraint is essential for the body’s long-term ability to absorb and utilize nutrients effectively, preventing diseases related to overconsumption such as diabetes, heart disease, and digestive disorders.

Drinking Alcohol in Moderation:

While it may not be realistic for everyone to abstain completely from alcohol, moderation is crucial. TCM and many Western doctors suggest that light to moderate drinking can be part of a healthy lifestyle, provided it does not interfere with one’s health, daily activities, or responsibilities. Excessive drinking, however, can lead to serious health issues, including liver disease, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of cancers.

Happiness Linked to Health:

It is said that 95% of happiness is derived from good health. Without health, our capacity to enjoy life's pleasures and handle its challenges significantly diminishes. By moderating our eating and drinking habits, we not only improve our physical health but enhance our mental and emotional well-being.

Moderation might require discipline, but the benefits it brings are worth the effort. In both eating and drinking, taking a measured approach ensures that we are not just surviving, but thriving. Adopting moderation as a foundational practice can lead us to healthier and more fulfilling lives.
